4th year

haha. Today I met a girl who's husband is just beginning his 4th year of med school.  I kept my mouth shut while she told the rest of us about externships, student loan payback, how much money they will make in residency.  She sounded like me...so sure of everything.

One of the best was that she isn't worried about the loans because her husband will take care of them.  True...but I am totally the one fielding the calls, filling out paperwork to be signed by Svend, calling back loan people with questions and answers during office hours, etc.

She commented to someone "we'll live just the same we have as students. I'm used to that so no biggie."  Oh man..YES BIGGIE! I swear we have less money now then we did as students.  Mostly because our food is now included in our meager budget. Do you want to drive a car or eat? Hmm.... Granted, she has 2 kids and we have 4...so maybe that makes a difference... And he is going to be an MD so maybe they make more in residency? I honestly don't know how they are "making it" now. They live in a $1700 month apartment! HOLY CRAP!!! That's nearly double what we could afford in school. o.u.c.h.

anyway, just made me giggle a little bit. because that was me...a year ago :)

  1. I can't even afford a $1700.00 a month rent. We would have no food whatsoever or anything else. YIKES!!

  2. Yeah, I know how you feel. Our budget is WAY tighter as post-docs as it ever was as students. Granted, we both got stipends as PhD students, so that made a big difference. And we have 3 kids now. But when people still assume we are students (heck no) it bugs me, but on the other hand, people don't understand why we live here (because we can afford it and it has good schools ...).
