vacation days

Every residency is different, and in ours, Svend doesn't get any vacation days. Nope. No two weeks paid vacay for him. Ugh. They have it "worked out" so that he will get his saved up vacation days at the end of his residency so that we have a month of pay while we're moving and starting a new job. Sounded GREAT in the beginning but after a year of working his booty off and not having a real vacation, he's worn out.

The kids and I have taking a trip to Texas to be with my family for 2 weeks. He is totally bummed. I didn't realize how bummed he was until the night before we left. He just wants time off...to do a real vacation. Not a 3 day holiday weekend.  I told him he should just go to his director and say "where do I get the paperwork to submit for vacation?" Then, when the director reminds him of his 6 weeks after he's done working, Svend could say "yeah, I think I'd rather have my 2 weeks now."

I wish. But, I do have to say that if Svend is sick, there is never a question of docking pay...and his co-resident's wife had a baby and the director gave him 5 days off-no quesitons asked. So, we do have a great residency...just not one that we can ask for a week or two off to sit around...

Now that he has officially begun his 2nd year, he is more relaxed (all one week of it...). He has 5 patients per day instead of 30, which means 5 notes per day instead of 30.  He will be on call aLOT more now, but hardly 1st call...so that's good. Of course, that also takes away vacation time...just in case he needs to come in to help a 1st year.

Just wish my hubby could have joined us for these 2 weeks... I look forward to 2 years from now when we get to take a vacation, as a family, for more than a holiday weekend :)
